Sun Microsystems Inc, Mountain View, says that it currently has no plans to combine its own Network File System with the Tops system from its acquisition target Centram Systems, because it does not want to rock the boat with a new product: Sun sees Tops as complementary to its own File System because NFS only handles remote file access, that is reading and writing bytes across a network, and does not translate file formats; NFS can also operate across a wide range of computers but Tops is at present supported only in a personal computer environment – but does have a built-in knowledge of file formats; as there is no NFS implementation for Apple’s Macintosh, the Centram product is also seen as useful because it enables linking of Macs to Suns using NFS and Tops together.
