In an attempt to set a Guinness World Record. an all-female group of IT experts, scientists, and engineers are participating on the ‘App-a-thon’ on 13th June at the heart of London’s Tech City.

The app-a-thon, led by Brunel University London lecturer Dr Lela Koulouri and UCL aca-demic Dr Sue Black, aims to teach school kids from across the UK how to build smartphone apps.

Thousands of kids from age 10 and above are expected to participate in the event which will teach them methods to create apps using a simple drag and drop app-building tool.

Lela said: "While we aim to break the Guinness World Record for people learning to code mobile apps at the same time, the main objective is to change perceptions.

"By having people learn from female trainers, we’ll demonstrate to young girls and boys that IT careers can be fun and that female scientists are not geeks or freaks but absolutely normal women."

The programme has been organised at a time when the tech industry is being accused of gender discrimination, and is trying to redefine its image by hiring more female tech experts.
