Revenues generated by the smart connected device (SCD) market in Western Europe is expected to reach $120bn by the end of 2013, with shipments hitting the 230 million mark, a new IDC report revealed.

IDC’s latest Quarterly Smart Connected Device Tracker said tablets would continue driving the SCD market, with shipments reaching over 45 million units, up 53.1% by the end of the year.

Overall SCD shipments in the Western European market are expected to reach 55 million during the third quarter of 2013, up 12%, mainly driven by the tablets and smartphones.

During Q3, tablet shipments are expected to rise 38%, while shipments of smartphones will represent about 60% of the overall SCD space..

IDC EMEA Personal Computing research manager Chrystelle Labesque said: "The smart connected device market is going through an accelerated expansion phase, fundamentally changing the way consumers and businesses use and consider their computing device, and the change in usage patterns will continue to drive innovation and to open new opportunities for the industry."

Samsung topped the overall device market, while Apple lead the European tablet market, followed by Samsung and Asus. And the smartphone market was dominated by Samsung, followed by Apple and Sony.

HP captured the overall European PC market, followed by Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Apple.
