Twitter has announced that it will start collecting data about apps downloaded by their users.

Citing Twitter’s help page, the Telegraph reported that the company has made this move in order to provide customised ads and improve user experience.

Twitter will automatically update Android and iOS users to the new service, but has not specified whether users will be able to turn the feature off.

Twitter said: "To help build a more personal Twitter experience for you, we are collecting and occasionally updating the list of apps installed on your mobile device so we can deliver tailored content that you might be interested in."

The company is presently trying to improve its revenue growth after unsatisfactory predictions for the fourth quarter, which the company expects to be between $440m and $450m.

Apart from Twitter, Facebook and Google also reportedly collect user data about third- party apps.
