About 40.6 million units of Tablets were shipped during the first quarter of 2013, a 117% increased compared to the 18.7 million units shipped in same period of 2012, according to a report from Strategy Analytics.

The report revealed that Apple iOS based tablets led the market with 48% of the global share with shipment of 19.5 million units, while the market share decreased from the 63.1% during the corresponding period of previous year.

Android based tablets had 43% market share during the period, a rise compared to a market share of 34.2% for the same period in the previous year.

Android based tablet shipments increased from 6.4 million units in the last year to 17.6 million units in the first quarter, reporting a 177% rise.

Windows secured third position with 7.5% of the market share with sales of three million units during the quarter.

Strategy Analytics Tablets director Peter King said that the demand for tablets among consumer, business and education users remains strong.

"When we add White-Box1 tablets into the mix, Android market share of the total tablet market increases significantly to 52% and iOS slips to 41%, as the bulk of the White-Box tablets are Android low budget models aimed at a different market to the branded tablets," King added.
