Samsung has unveiled two Galaxy Tab S devices, its thinnest and lightest tablets to date, upping its ante against rivals like Apple and Sony.
Both the 8.4 inch and 10.5-inch versions of the Tab S come with WQXGA Super AMOLED screen offering 2560 by 1600 pixel resolution.
The company claims that the next generation display technology delivers more than 90% of Adobe RGB colour coverage, 100,000:1 contrast ratio, improving the image quality, ‘making blacks darker and whites brighter’.
Adaptive Display features in the tablets can intelligently adjust gamma, saturation, and sharpness based on the application being viewed, while it can adjust to colour temperature of the viewing environment and ambient lighting.
Advanced outdoor visibility technology will allow users to view contents on display even in brighter light, the company said.
Samsung Electronics IT & Mobile Division CEO and president JK Shin said the tablet is becoming a popular personal viewing device for enjoying content, which makes the quality of the display a critical feature.
"With the launch of the Galaxy Tab S, Samsung is setting the industry bar higher for the entire mobile industry," Shin added.
Galaxy Tab S devices will be 6.6 mm thick, which is thinner than iPad Air and weigh 465g for 10.5-inch version and 294g for 8.4-inch version.
Android Kitkat (4.4) powered tablets will be powered by Exynos 5 Octa (1.9 GHz QuadCore + 1.3 GHz Quadcore) or Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3 GHz Quadcore processors.
Expected to hit some selected market from July, they will come with Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity with inbuilt storage of 16/32GB which can be extended up to 128 GB with MicroSD cards.
The devices will have 8MP camera with LED Flash and 2.1MP Full HD recording feature, and come with debut magazine service called "Papergarden".
