PayPal Beacon hands-free payment device

PayPal has launched the new Beacon add-on hardware device that enables users to automatically check-in at a store, receive notifications about deals and information and make payments without using a credit card or smartphone.

The new low-energy Bluetooth communicator can be plugged into a power outlet and enable retailers to detect customer’s PayPal app, sending a notification to the cashier, who already knows about the customer and automatically charges the PayPal account.

PayPal president David Marcus said that PayPal Beacon opens the door to a fundamentally different way to use technology to make shopping more valuable and more personal for consumers and retailers.

"Just walk in a store, and, like magic, when you’re ready to pay, money is transferred securely. No wallet. No card. Nothing to do. Not even touching your phone," Marcus said.

According to the online money-transfer firm, consumers will have full control of stores they are interested to check in to, get provoked to confirm payment, and enable a hands-free experience.

PayPal also revealed that the new device will not track a user’s location, in order to ensure users’ privacy.

Beacon Bluetooth communicator supports payment terminals from firms including NCR, Micros Systems and Shopkeep.com.
