The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has selected systems software provider Basho Technologies to revamp its Spine1UK database system.
The partnership came about after the Danish Health Authority successfully created a national record system using Basho’s Riak distributed database solution.
The NHS said Riak will improve the performance, scalability and reliability for its latest Spine2 database system without having to use expensive system integrators.
As a result, the time taken to implement new features would be reduced and patient care improved.
Greg Collins, CEO at Basho Technologies, said keeping costs low while improving the level of care is essential in the health care industry.
"As medical information becomes digital, government health organisations need IT capabilities that provide uninterrupted, reliable access to critical, life-saving information.
Riak’s built-in resiliency and predictable scalability are two important features that directly benefit the NHS and the citizens of the United Kingdom," he added.
The Massachusetts-based company added OpenStack storage support to the latest version of its Riak CS software in August 2013.
