Microsoft has revealed it will launch its next generation gaming console, Xbox 720, at an event on May 22, 2013, at its Redmond campus in the US, eight years since the last version was released.

The launch comes three months after Sony’s launch of its forthcoming PlayStation 4 (PS4) gaming console.

According to reports, the successor to Xbox 360 is expected to be powered by AMD system-on-a-chip that incorporates Jaguar central processing units with graphics chip.

The new console would allow game developers to develop gaming titles that they had earlier developed for PCs and mobile devices.

Featuring an eight-core processor, an 8GB of system memory, 800MHz graphics processor in addition to a Blu-ray drive, the console would also support range of payment methods for content, including in-game micro-transactions and subscription services.

The new console would also feature built in WiFi, USB 3.0 ports, digital audio and HDMI outputs.

In addition, Microsoft’s new gadget could be an all-in-one living room gadget offering streaming video, television and music services in addition to social media.
