Microsoft has released a new ergonomically designed keyboard and mouse to help minimize stress to hands while typing and prevent repetitive strain injury and carpal tunnel syndrome.
The Sculpt keyboard, codenamed "Manta Ray" has an open design to allow a more natural posture. The keys all gently slope towards the centre of the keyboard where it parts slightly to separate the left hand from the right for natural wrist alignment.
The keyboard includes a cushioned palm rest and a removable riser to lift up the front. The number pad is also detached for ease of use, making it look like a calculator without a display screen.
"Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop is designed for productivity, with an eye on ergonomic excellence," says Microsoft. "By providing a relaxed, comfortable computing experience, it enables you to work without the stress, strain, and discomfort of other keyboards and mice you may have used in the past."
The Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop also includes a mouse with a more pronounced curve, making it more ball-like and enables it to slide under the user’s palm more easily. It will help prevent RSI by ensuring the bottom of the hand doesn’t touch the desk as much.
Microsoft claims that 90% of people only use their right thumb to hit the spacebar while the backspace key is one of the most frequently used keys on a keyboard. Therefore, the left spacebar can be reconfigured to act as a backspace button if users wish.
It’s also wireless to rid your desk or unwanted wires and has buttons configured for Windows 8.
