Lenovo has acquired 21 patent portfolios from Unwired Planet in a $100m deal.
The acquired portfolio comprises patents for 3G and LTE mobile technologies and other major mobility patents.
Lenovo general counsel Jay Clemens said the current investment extends the company’s existing intellectual property portfolio.
"It will serve the company well as we grow and develop our worldwide smartphone and mobile PC Plus business in new markets," he said.
The Chinese PC maker is licensed to Unwired Planet’s intellectual property portfolio for several years, covering standard essential, implementation, and application layer technology for mobile devices.
Upon the current transaction, Unwired Planet’s portfolio would comprise about 2,500 issued and pending US and foreign patented technologies.
In January 2014, Lenovo acquired Google’s struggling Motorola Mobility smartphone business in a $2.91bn deal, what is claimed to be China’s largest-ever tech acquisition.
