Infinera, a provider of Internet transport networks, has collaborated with Telefonica’s research and development arm to announce the first ever multi-layer automation for transport networks.

Internet traffic is forecast to grow at between 30 and 50% per year, and Infinera said that its solution will give service providers an improved Intelligent Transport Network to deal with the fluctuating bandwith and service demands.

"Infinera continues to drive innovation in the optical communications industry," said Ron Kline, an Ovum analyst.

The new solution includes a super-channel FlexROADM (reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexer), the first standards based multi-layer control plane for spectrum switched optical networks (SSON) and the first 500 gigabit per second (Gb/s) flexible-grid super-channels.

"At Telefonica I+D we continuously explore innovative technologies to help create the communication services of the future," said Juan Fernandez-Palacios at Telefonica I+D lab.

"Our successful testing of the innovative FlexROADM helped shape the solution Infinera is announcing today. This is one example of how Telefonica I+D collaborates with technology innovators like Infinera to shape the next generation of optical networks."

Kline said: "Adding super-channel FlexROADM capabilities to its unique photonic integrated circuit based architecture deepens the company’s differentiation. A unified control plane with multi-layer automation provides needed flexibility at a time when communications service providers really need it."
