IBM is planning to extend support for Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor to its Power Systems portfolio of server products to boost competitive position against x86 iron.
The software firm is also planning to offer KVM across its Linux-only Power servers product line-up in 2014, which would provide its clients with better choice when they adopt Linux-based systems to drive new workloads including big data, cloud, mobile and social computing.
In March 2013, IBM revealed that it will embrace the open source OpenStack cloud controller for its SmartCloud public cloud, and would also replace its SmartCloud Entry cloud controller with OpenStack.
IBM is also set to open its first North American IBM Power Systems Linux Centers in Austin, Texas and the in New York in July 2013, which would support and accelerate the adoption of the Linux operating system across the enterprise.
The centres will also facilitate software developers to develop and deploy new applications for big data, cloud, mobile and social business computing on open technology building blocks through Linux and the new IBM POWER 7+ processor technology.
IBM’s new centres’ opening follows unveiling of the world’s first IBM’s Power Systems Linux Center in May 2013 in Beijing, China.
Resources at the new centre include Linux training workshops, hands-on assistance from dedicated Linux and IBM systems experts and allow accessing IBM’s business consulting experts and business partner resources.
IBM is also planning to establish more centres in both growth and established markets over the next several months.
