Google is reportedly planning to make its self driving car unit a separate company under the Alphabet banner.

Citing a person familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported that the search giant will separate itself from the automotive project in 2016.

The project has already logged over a million miles on public roads around San Francisco and Austin, Texas.

It is believed that Alphabet may start a new service in those cities, with no timeframe mentioned for the launch.

Google, in August this year, reveled plans to separate the core web advertising business from new ventures such as driverless cars.

YouTube, Android, advertising, maps, and search are part of the Google unit. Alphabet’s businesses include new ventures such as the smart-home unit Nest, Calico, Google Ventures, Google Capital, Google X and other subsidiaries.

In September, Google appointed John Krafcik as CEO to spearhead its self-driving car project, which was launched in 2009 with plans to introduce self-driving cars by 2020.

The project would allow Google to compete with Uber, which also aims to replace drivers with self-driving cars.
