Facebook has found a way to block ad-blockers on the desktop version of its site, changing the ways pop up ads are displayed. The new technology used by the social media giant will render adblockers useless and will display ads on its desktop version.

Perhaps as a way to reassure users, Facebook will also enhance ad blocking preferences for its website, giving users the choice over the types of ads that will be displayed.

For a very long time, ads have been a controversial subject over the internet. On the one hand, they offer ad revenues which is making it possible to ‘make money over the internet’, but on the other hand, these ads have been ‘disruptive’ and impact user experience while slowing load times.

Facebook Ads & Business Platform vice president Andrew Bosworth said in a blog post: “When they’re relevant and well-made, ads can be useful, helping us find new products and services and introducing us to new experiences — like an ad that shows you your favorite band is coming to town or an amazing airline deal to a tropical vacation.

“But because ads don’t always work this way, many people have started avoiding certain websites or apps, or using ad blocking software, to stop seeing bad ads. These have been the best options to date.”

Facebook said that it has been working on the development of new ad formats to enhance people’s experience online. It also said that it will empower its users with controls over their advertising experience and will provide an updated approach to ad blocking on Facebook.

Usually, ads are loaded from web domains that are different from the web page. Ad blockers make a list of these domains and block content from these domains immediately. Facebook says that it has figured out a way, where the content and the ads will appear to be from the same domain.

This can let ads on the webpage appear as normal text or graphics, rendering the adblocking software useless. The company also pointed out that some adblocking software companies take money and allow ads to pass through the filter.
