Mobile payment app, CurrentC informed its users about a potential hack saying that unauthorised third party sources have obtained email address of some of its users who are registered with the site.
The as yet unreleased mobile payments system is expected to free merchants from credit card fees they have to pay with every swipe.
The investigation about the security breach was conducted by the anti-credit-card retailer’s consortium Merchant Consumer Exchange (MCX).
CurrentC confirmed that only email addresses were hacked and no other sensitive user information have been leaked.
However, the system has been criticised for collecting sensitive user data which includes date of birth, social security number, and driver’s license number.
According to reports, Apple Pay and Google Wallet do not ask for sensitive user information.
In the email sent to customers CurrentC said: "In an abundance of caution, we wanted to make you aware of this incident and urge you not to open links or attachments from unknown third parties.
"Also known that neither CurrentC nor Merchant Consumer Exchange (MCX) will ever send you emails asking for your financial account, social security number or other personally identifiable information.
"MCX is continuing to investigate this situation and will provide updates as necessary.
"We take the security of our users’ information extremely seriously."
