Networking specialist Ciena will supply packet software and switchgear to NORDUnet which operates a pan European optical transmission system.

The deal will see NORDUnet’s network run on converged packet optical platforms and software from Ciena for 100G Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching.

Its network would then support research projects and applications for the Nordic National Research and Education Networks community that require high bandwidth.

The deal also includes on-demand services, allowing NORDUnet to upload terabyte-size files to the cloud.

Lars Lange Bjørn, manager of network planning and engineering at NORDUnet, said: "Research and education institutions have exceptionally demanding network needs. With Ciena’s platforms we can deliver the best possible service experience to our end-customers with the flexibility and agility to quickly react to changing network requirements and to support cross-border collaborations."

Virginie Hollebecque, head of enterprise and public sector for EMEA at Ciena, added: "NordUnet is making the most of this; it plays a central role in enabling a wide range of projects, each of which has unique requirements that depend on a robust, flexible and cost-effective network."
