Chromebook shipments are expected to reach 11 million units in 2019, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28%, according to a report from ABI Research.
According to the report, about 2.1 million Chromebooks were delivered throughout 2013 and about 89% of the total shipments were supplied across North America.
The report revealed that the ASP and shipment growth of Chromebooks is due to positive market response towards budget conscious products across a slowly reviving economy along with interest from the education business vertical.
ABI Research research analyst Stephanie Van Vactor said the research firm tracked Chromebooks across six regions and found the average selling price (ASP) to be $338.
"This truly budget-driven device is a disruptive force to the portable PC market," Van Vactor added.
According to ABI Research, the portable PC market is struggling to regain market growth, while the ultraportable segment powered by the Windows 8 operating system and the 2-in-1 segment has experienced a small growth during fourth quarter of 2013.
The ASP of ultraportables has decreased by 7.4% year-over-year in 2013 and is expected to drop through 2019 due to stiff competition for share of wallet from mobile devices and other form-factors.
Factors such as cost, connectivity, and greater reliance on cloud services are expected to be driving forces in growth for ultraportable PCs.
ABI Research senior practice director Jeff Orr said there are many events that can shift the market in 2014, including the EOL of Windows XP, the adoption of Chromebooks, and a stronger focus on web and cloud services.
"How consumers and business audiences respond to these changes will impact the trajectory of the market," Orr added.
