Research In Motion (RIM) has added nearly 15,000 apps to its BlackBerry App World store over the weekend, as part of the firm’s ‘Port-a-thon’ promotion.

The promotion paid developers $100 respectively to develop apps for the new BlackBerry 10 platform.

RIM VP of developer relations Alec Saunders said in a twitter message that the mini-contest attracted about 15,000 new app submissions within 37.5 hours.

"Well there you have it. 37.5 hours in, we hit 15,000 apps for this portathon. Feel like I’ve run a marathon. Thanks to all the devs!"Saunders said.

The Canadian firm is planning to launch the long-awaited BlackBerry 10 operating system (OS), along with two new smartphones, including the BlackBerry Z10 (L-Series) and full Qwerty (N-Series), that are powered by the new OS, on 30 January 2013.

The company will also launch about 70,000 new applications at the event, in a bid to meet its target to support 90% of the top 600 most popular apps in the global app market.

The six new BlackBerry 10 devices are expected to cover the range for high, middle and low-end price sectors.
