Apple’s online services including iTunes, Game Centre and iCloud are back online after a long outage on Wednesday.

Users could not access iOS App Store, Mac App Store, iTunes and iBooks shop. The outage started at approximately 5AM ET, preventing users wanting to download content or update existing files.

Users vented their anger through Twitter using hashtags like #itunesdown and #appstoresdown, for the 12 hour service disruption.

The company has now updated its status page at 5:04 pm ET, saying that the services have been restored and operating normally.

Apple has blamed the rare service disruption to an internal Domain Name System error, reported Reuters.

A spokesperson from the company told BBC, "We apologise to our customers experiencing problems with iTunes and other services this morning.

"The cause was an internal DNS [domain name system] error at Apple. We’re working to make all of the services available to customers as soon as possible, and we thank everyone for their patience."
