Android mobile app revenue is expected to double to about $6.8bn by the end of 2013 compared to last year, according to a report.
ABI Research’s report claims Android smartphone app revenue is expected to increase from 59.1% to 65.9% during the next 12 months.
The smartphone app market will generate most of the revenue to Android.
ABI Research senior analyst Josh Flood said that though Apple’s iOS leads the other mobile operating systems’ revenues, a greater number of Android smartphones in use is pulling down Apple’s lead in the market.
"This year, Android smartphones will ship by a factor of more than three-to-one to iPhones," Flood added.
The report revealed that the major contributor to Android’s app revenues is advertising, which is based on Google’s analytics search engine.
Android’s plan to include the carrier billing for its app purchases is expected to be the deciding factor against iOS in-house payments, the report said.
According to the report, app purchases through mobile carriers have recorded significantly higher successful completions when compared to paying by credit or debit cards, especially in emerging markets such as Latin America and Asia-Pacific.
