Online retailer Amazon UK approximately racked up 4.1 million items on Cyber Monday (2nd December), registering its busiest shopping day in its history as well as the highest sales record on the day.
Beating the recent record of four million sales set only three days before on ‘Black Friday’, Amazon received orders at a rate of 47 items per second on 2nd December.
Amazon.co.uk managing director Christopher North said that Black Friday really captured the imagination of customers as shown by the fact that the company had its busiest day to date and reached one day sales of over 4m items for the very first time in its history.
"Customers were then out in force again yesterday, shopping for Christmas presents and generating our busiest day of sales ever," North said.
During the biggest internet shopping day of the year, British citizens splurged out £97m more than 2012 in a single day only flash sales.
The online retailer received highest orders for the Kindle family of devices, including Kindle Fire HDX 7in, while over million items of clothing and shoes were ordered from the site last week, marking the largest week for fashion sales so far.
IBM’s latest report revealed that the US consumers also made Cyber Monday the biggest online shopping day in history with a 20.6%rise in online sales.
