The Hackathon for Women is a Bangalore-based event organised by Grace Hopper India and is in its fourth year.
This year more than 100 women from the technology industry attended to contribute towards humanitarian open-source projects, building on top of MifosX, Bachchao and Clinical Reminders.
MifosX is a financial-service system, and many of the female hackers were working to build a platform that enables financial-service providers to serve around 2.5 billion poor people around the world.
The Clinical Reminders system enables the hackers to build and work on a web service that gives users reminders and alerts on medication, tests or immunisations.
The coding event was part of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in India Conference 2013 which was hosted by the Anita Borg Institute.
Geetha Kannan, representative of Anita Borg Institute’s India made a powerful statement, that shows that women are no longer secondary in the technology industry: "The days of male-only coding platforms are gone and will hopefully never come back".
