IBM has expanded its Lotus messaging and collaboration software with the delivery of secure enterprise mail for the Apple iPad.

According to IBM, the new Lotus Notes Traveler is a no charge software that can be downloaded by Lotus Notes customers providing two-way, over-the-air synchronisation of enterprise e-mail, calendar and contact between Lotus Domino servers and mobile devices, including the iPad.

IBM said that Lotus Notes Traveler also allows iPad users to enjoy the security of per message mail encryption. The Lotus Notes based information will automatically synchronise and be up to date on the device.

The IBM Lotus Notes Traveler Companion is a native iPhone OS application that enables the viewing of encrypted mail on the iPad and iPhone. The Lotus Notes Traveler iPad will have up to date push mail, calendar and contacts, even when they are in a meeting, the company said.

In addition, the IBM portal based web pages will display on the iPad through the Safari browser. Lotus Notes is available in a cloud based version, and also comes bundled with hardware and other offerings via its Lotus Foundations line for mid-sized businesses.

Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president for messaging and collaboration at IBM, said: “IBM is committed to providing the broadest possible collaboration software support on all major mobile platforms. With high anticipation and many requests for iPad compatibility for Lotus Notes, we’re pleased we can offer this now at a highly secure level.”
