After the success of Apple’s gold iPhone 5S, HTC have followed the trend and released its own gold smartphone.

A limited edition HTC One phone made from 18-carat fold has been released, and for those with a more modest budget, a more affordable HTC One with a gold finish will also be available.

The gold HTC One has the same specifications as the original device: A 4.7-inch 1080p screen, a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 4-megapixel ultrapixel camera.

The gold HTC One will reportedly be available in Finland on Dec. 12 for $845, compared to the 18-carat HTC One for $4,400. Information about availability in other markets is still to come.

Samsung also went for gold with a special edition of its Galazy S4, however it is only available in Middle Eastern Markets.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry’s attempt at creating a luxury smartphone has fallen flat. BlackBerry teamed up with Porsche to engineer the new Porsche Design P9982 smartphone. The limited edition phone will be exclusively available at Harrods and Selfridges Carphone Warehouse, and in Dubai, and at $2,400, one of the most expensive phones on the market.

The phone has been criticised by some as simply a status symbol, and given the poor state of BlackBerry’s handsets, if the rich and fabulous are looking to shell out for an exclusive phone, they are more likely to look to something like an 18-carat gold HTC One rather than a flailing BlackBerry.
