Going for gold: How important are aesthetics in tech?

Would you pay big bucks for a gold plated phone?

By Cbr Rolling Blog

HTC One Gold

The gold version of the iPhone 5S proved to be a hit after selling out quickly and becoming a rare handset. One even sold on eBay for over $10,000. The Samsung Galaxy S4 also comes in gold, which seems to be the colour of the season in the tech world.

Well, HTC wanted in on all the fun, but its gone one up on Apple and Samsung. It’s created a special edition HTC One, with 18ct gold plating on the front and back, at the humble price tag of £2,750.

The smartphone was created in partnership with Goldgenie founder Laban Roomes to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the MOBO awards. With only five of the gold phones being created, they make the gold gadgets even more exclusive and out of reach for those of us who aren’t willing to fork out our savings for a phone, or queue for several days outside an Apple store just to get our hands on new releases.

So just how important are aesthetics in technology?

The sleek look of MacBooks was copied across most other brands, with the stylish, slim iPad forming the basis for tablets the world over.

Just look at Vertu, the luxury smartphone manufacturer. It has just launched its Constellation smartphone for £4,000 which features high quality calf leather on its casing in a number of fashionable colours.
