Cash boost for creative thinkers

Over the years, Scotland has been renowned for creativity and innovation.

In fact, inventor of TV John Logie Baird was from my hometown, Helensburgh, on the Clydeside. My grandfather even invented the cold air balloon but, unfortunately, it never really took off.

So it was great to hear that 11 Glasgow-based companies have won a total of £620,000 funding to help encourage further innovation in the creative and digital sectors.

The Digital and Creative Clyde Launchpad was a competition launched in January 2013 by the UK’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board, in partnership with Creative Clyde. The funding is fantastic for SMEs and can only encourage continued innovation in these sectors.

Some of the innovative ideas that will receive the cash injection are computer games rendering technology that will help make feature films easier and cheaper to produce; a 3D virtual reality technology that creates highly immersive branding and training experiences; and a small flexible digital tag for wireless monitoring and security applications.

Good luck to all those who keep striving for innovation. Hopefully, they’ll do a bit better than my uncle.
