The trend of parents-to-be sharing ultrasound photos on social networking seems like an overshare to some.

But how would you feel about showing friends and family a model of your unborn baby?

With the help of 3D printing start-up 3D babies, this could be the way of the future.

The technology uses ultrasound scans to create a model of the foetus, with facial features and body position in the womb all accurate to the picture.

"The pregnancy with your child is a once in a lifetime experience. Recall those feelings over again with your own 3D Baby," says 3D Babies.

"This is a great way to share the excitement of your new baby with family and friends. Your 3D Baby will be a treasured family remembrance of your pregnancy and new baby."

For those who do not want to know the gender or their baby, genitals can be left off the model. Although if you are going to the effort of having your baby 3D-printed, you’d think you would want the whole picture.

The life-size models, at eight inches long are accurate to the size of a 23-24 week old foetus and cost $600. A halfsize model is available at four inches with a mini two inch representation available at $200.

The company is using crowd-funding via Indiegogo to raise $15,000 to purchase a new 3D printer to boost production of the models.
