2013 Christmas app downloads hit slump

Download increase just 11% opposed to last year's impressive 90%.

By Cbr Rolling Blog

For those of you who were lucky enough to be presented with a new smartphone or tablet this Christmas, you probably navigated straight to the app store to kit yourself out with the latest and greatest from the app store.

However, data from app analytics group Flurry highlights that consumers downloaded 11% more apps on Christmas Day this year than on 25th December 2012, markedly slower than 2011-2012 increase rate of 90%.
This is most likely to be because the number of people receiving their first devices is declining as the years go on, according to Mary Ellen Gordon, director of industry insight and analytics at Flurry.

"The slowing growth rates and smaller Christmas Day app download spike signal market maturation," she wrote in a blog post.

"Consumers who are on second, third or fourth devices have apps that they like and trust, and while they still download new apps, there isn’t much more impetus to do so on Christmas than any other day when they have a little downtime."

Personally, I was too busy eating Turkey and drinking mulled wine on Christmas Day to download apps. I have however been taking advantage of the 12 Days of Christmas app on the Apple app store.

The free app offers you a free download every day from the 26th December to 6th January. Perhaps if others are reaping the benefits of this app there will have been a spike in downloads over the last week…
