Helion update promises more automation

By John Oates

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has used its customer event Discover in Las Vegas to announce an update to its Helion cloud portfolio of products.

Although HPE no longer offers its own cloud service it is committed to providing kit for customers who are building cloud services either for their own use or for their customers. As the speed of deployments continues to increase so there is more demand for systems which help automate what have traditionally been manual, time consuming jobs for IT departments.

HPE Helion Cloud Suite provides management and automation to run applications across hybrid cloud environments. It promises a common simplified self-service store front for IT departments and developers alike. This will allow fully automated deployment and day-to-day management of cloud services whether they’re public, private or hybrid environments.

Along with management services Helion Cloud Suitalso  provides a development environment for creating native cloud and traditional applications. The software suite includes HPE Helion Stackato to accelerate deployment of cloud applications and HPE Helion OpenStack to configure and manage mixed data centres with products from several vendors.

The company is also bolstering its storage offering with the release of HPE Cloudline 3100 Server. This provides dense, small footprint storage for data centres running Hadoop, Cassandra and other big data platforms.

The company’s service division is supporting the product release with Workload Portability Services to provide quicker and easier ways to analyse an enterprise’s workloads requirements and, if necessary, move and modernise these workloads. This uses pattern recognition to classify workloads to enable them to be moved to standardised and consolidated systems.

The products and services will be available in the second half of 2016.

These will all integrate with HPE’s management and intelligence system OneView, which is also getting a refresh.

OneView 3.0 can run the whole family of HPE high end computing products as well as HPE Synergy – which is HPE’s flagship composable infrastructure offering.

The management suite offers a global dashboard covering all of a global organisations computing resources whether in-house, remote or virtual. It automates many features of management and deployment tasks. OneView 3.0 also integrates with Helion CloudSystem which can then provision individual real world servers or entire virtual clusters directly.

Michael York, systems engineer at US healthcare provider Asante, said:“HPE OneView is a really slick tool for managing configuration consistency and enforcing compliance across the enterprise…We needed a solution that would scale forward and run Epic across multiple data centers. As a small IT organization, we also wanted to move away from designing and developing the infrastructure ourselves to more of a converged infrastructure that’s fully engineered and certified for Epic. HPE delivered on all counts, and more.”

OneView 3.0 will ship in the third quarter of 2016.
