Oracle has suggested that CSPs need continuous investment to prevent network outage as advancements in consumer technologies such as streaming video and connected devices could lead to an explosive growth in LTE diameter signaling traffic.

Diameter signaling is a protocol or language critical network functions that offer communication across core LTE networks.

The signaling, which is showing no sign of slowing, is expected to generate 565 million messages per second (MPS) by 2020, according to a report released by Oracle.

The growth will also be fuelled by signaling technology as 5G implementations start to roll out in years to come.

The report said it is important to know from the traffic is coming from and what’s driving it in order to effectively the surge in traffic.

It notes that LTE Broadcast remains one of the fastest-growing generators of diameter signaling traffic as video becomes more prevalent.

According to the report, the voice over LTE (VoLTE) is also expected to see a significant growth as consumers to look to multi-task or use voice and data at the same time.

Oracle Communications senior vice president and general manager Doug Suriano said: “LTE continues to gain momentum, fueled by new ways of transmitting and consuming information—from vine videos to car sensors that detect upcoming road hazards.

“CSPs need to continue to innovate and properly plan for Diameter signaling growth to meet changing industry and consumer demands, and leveraging the cloud is one of the clearest avenues for CSPs to achieve these goals.”

The report finds North America as the leading region in the world in LTE penetration as service providers move aggressively to sunset 2G and 3G services.

In the US, 59% of the connections are estimated to be 4G/LTE by 2020.

However, the Asia Pacific is projected to emerge the largest generator of diameter signaling traffic in the world, with over 56% of the global LTE connections by 2020.

While Latin America and the Caribbean are expected to generate 15.6 million MPS by 2020, the Middle East and Africa region is projected to see 19 million MPS.

Europe currently generates 12% of the worlds diameter signaling.
