While the common line regarding the Year 2000 problem has been that it could encourage companies to move away from legacy systems onto newer generation hardware and software, as a cheaper alternative to converting existing systems, a new survey carried out by UK research firm Gatton Consultancy Group found that half of the IT directors they surveyed expected that between 25% and 50% of their new developments would be delayed as a result of the problem. It seems that companies are pouring so much money and resorces into fixing the problem that new technology developments are being neglected.
