San Jose, California-based Wyse has introduced a new version of its thin client operating system optimized for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, VDI, as well as a virtualization package based on its S Class thin client hardware.
Wyse teamed up with VMware, which is a subsidiary of storage giant EMC Corp, to create the Wyse Thin OS – VDI Edition, designed to support VMware’s VDI technology, which enables individual desktops to be hosted within virtual machines in a data center. VMware launched its VDI Alliance in April to team up with hardware and software suppliers, and Wyse was an initial member.
Like IBM’s Virtualized Hosted Client Infrastructure, VDI is designed to take the processing power off the desktop and places it in the data center for central management, while improving efficiency through the use of virtual environments.
The thin client user device is a key piece in making the theory a reality, alongside virtual machine, application streaming and systems management technologies. Both Wyse and VMware are also involved in IBM’s Virtualized Hosted Client Infrastructure.
