Western Digital has launched its newest generation of the My Book Studio external hard drives that are designed for use with Mac computers and Apple Time Machine, and can also be reformatted for PCs.

Now offered in 3 TB storage capacity, the new design clads a brushed aluminum casing, keeping the drive cool, with the aluminum finish drawing away heat.

The new offering features Western Digital’s Caviar Green technology, eliminating the need for an internal fan as a cooling solution to reduce drive noise compared to traditional drives and extend the life of the drive.

Offered in capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB, the My Book Studio hard drive is an updated design of its My Book Studio drive which will maintain all the features that are needed by the creative community, including Advanced Format technology adding large capacities up to 3 TB, the company said.

The My Book Studio external hard drives also use less power, thanks to the company’s GreenPower Technology which reduces the overall heat and noise when the drive is in use.

The company said the offering is equipped with FireWire 800/400 and USB 2.0 interfaces for pumping data between the Mac and its platters, an AC adapter and supports Apple Time Machine.

It is also powered with user-controlled automatic backup software and Western Digital’s SmartWare drive management, can be set up with password protection and hardware encryption.
