The speech processing and computer-PABX market was showing signs of hotting up at Telecom ’91 in Geneva. Paul Cheslaw, managing director of the Maidenhead, Berkshire arm of VMX Inc said that the company will be launching its VMXworks applications processor into the European market early next year. The move, he acknowledged is being made partly as a response to competitors that are producing cheap personal computer-based systems for simple voice mail applications. VMXworks is a hardware board that slips into the company’s voice mail boxes and enables the development of more sophisticated interaction between PABXs and host computers. With its low-end VMX 100 system trying to keep the MS-DOS crowd at bay, the company is concentrating on trying to show how the PABX linked intelligently to various hosts can become a key part of the office.
