VIA Technologies, a provider of x86 processor platforms for PC, client, ultra mobile and embedded markets, has launched VIA Nano X2 processor for mainstream PC markets, which enables computational performance and multi-tasking ability, which uses less power and is based on a 40 nanometre fabrication process.

Targeted to a range of PC products that include desktop, all-in-one and mobile notebook designs, the VIA Nano X2 processors extend their reach into multitasking and performance-oriented segments, the company said.

VIA Nano X2 processors are built using the 64-bit superscalar ‘Isaiah’ architecture that powers single-core VIA Nano processors, for mini-note, small form factor desktop, and energy-efficient server designs.

It also features two out-of-order x86 cores, VIA Nano X2 processors deliver performance on multi-thread applications, and also comes with SSE4, native 64-bit support, VT CPU virtualisation technology, and VIA PadLock hardware security features.

VIA Nano X2 processors are compatible with previous VIA Nano, VIA C7, VIA C7-M and VIA Eden processors, facilitating upgrades of existing designs. They are also compatible with all VIA media system processors and digital media chipsets including the latest VIA VX900 and VIA VN1000.

VIA Technologies VP international marketing Richard Brown said improvements in semi-conductor fabrication mean they can now increase the number of processor cores while maintaining the same less energy consumption levels that users are used to.
