Veritas Software Corp, the Mountain View, California storage management company has acquired privately held Windward Technologies Inc, a Marlboro, Massachusetts-based software company which specializes in applications for predicting storage system failure. Windward’s fault management software uses statistical error trend analysis to monitor computer hardware and predict potential failures. Veritas says it will combine this technology with its Storage Resource Management (SRM) family of products. The value of the all cash acquisition was not disclosed, but Veritas said it will result in a second quarter charge of $0.03 to $0.04 per share for the write off of in- process research and development. This implies an acquisition cost of between $1.5m and $3m.
