The VeriSign Email Security Service is designed to automatically process all email before it reaches the enterprise, and then deliver only legitimate email to network users.

It requires no hardware and no software to be installed, which means an organization can turn on the service in less than an hour Souheil Badran VeriSign VP and general manager for Europe said. It will compete head on with similar email security services operated by the likes of MessageLabs.

The company said that an enterprise simply points its original mail exchange record to the VeriSign network, and then configures mail servers to only accept IP connections from the VeriSign network.

VeriSign’s service is based on its multi-level filtering approach which it says is updated and tested every 10 minutes. Spam characteristics are aggregated and the spam-filtering systems adapt to changing email traffic conditions.

The company claims to be able to block over 90% of spam, against what it said is be one of the lowest false-positive rate in the industry.

The spam filtering stage uses these three filter layers to examine all inbound emails to ensure that unsolicited emails are blocked: reputation-based blocking (using a proprietary blacklist of verified spammers), fingerprinting (to detect matches with known spam characteristics), and rules-based scoring.

The pricing per user depends on the types of services and the number of users within the enterprise using the service Badran said. In the UK it will range from .50 pounds (roughly $1) to 1.75 pounds ($3.25) per month per seat.
