Uxbridge, Middlesexbased, Verifone UK has launched new software for its point of sale transaction terminals which enables Verifone terminals to perform offline credit and debit transactions and to store transaction and credit card details for automatic polling overnight by a host computer. Because the packet-switched network is used overnight, costs are reduced as line rental cost is lower overnight. The software is only available on the Tranz 420 terminal at the moment but it will become available on other Verifone terminals. The terminals are built around the Z80 and run Verifone’s own operating system. Tranzfer 50 can be used to support up to 15 different card types simultaneously and it can also be used for other functions such as inventory data capture reading the bar codes on products, and price lookup. Verifone says support, maintenance and attendance costs can also be reduced, using its Zontalk 2000 application management system. Programme modifications can be made from a single remote site. Tranzfer comes bundled with whatever hardware is being used, in the case of the Tranz 420, the price is UKP450 for volume purchases.
