Lucent Technologies Inc spin-off Veridicom Inc has shipped its security system employing fingerprint authentication technology. The company, which began talking up its technology last year, says the product includes hardware and software components that provide a simple and convenient alternative to passwords for accessing personal computers and information networks on Unix and Windows platforms. The product uses a silicon scanner the size of a postage stamp to read users’ fingerprints which Veridicom says makes it useful for keyboards, laptops and mobile phones. The company claims that more than a dozen customers are currently incorporating its technology into various products and that we can expect them to begin surfacing early next year. Veridicom also says it’s agreed to work with Intel Corp to incorporate interfaces for biometrics into the Common Data Security Architecture.
