VA Research Inc has signed a letter of intent to acquire certain assets of Linux Hardware Solutions (LHS). LHS president Kit Cosper will become the primary advisor for VA’s service and support organization, reporting to VA vice president John Hall. Linux Hardware Systems and VA have long shared common principles and a vision of how to help the Linux community achieve world domination, Cosper said in a statement, joining forces makes sense. VA will retain LHS operations in its Wilmington, North Carolina address. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

VA has subsequently reorganized to focus on commercial products while pursuing Linux research and development. As part of the reorg, the company is changing its name to VA Linux Systems Inc. Two divisions, VA Linux Systems and VA Linux Labs, will report to Larry Augustin, president and CEO of VA Linux Systems Inc. It’s worth noting that VA Linux Labs now employs Geoff Harrison, the man behind the Mandrake distribution, Sam Mehat, architect of Corel’s Netwinder, and Mark Vojkevich, a longtime contributor to the Xfree86 windowing system. á
