Unisys Corp, Blue Bell, Pensylvania, has been awarded a $70m systems integration contract by Brazil’s Federal Superior Electoral Court to provide hardware, software and services in support of a national electronic voting system: through a secure, country-wide network of electronic voting machines attached to regional personal computers that will consolidate votes and send them to a central system; the first phase will be used this October to support the election of mayors and county representatives in 26 capitals and 26 other cities with elector populations of more than 200,000; upwards of 33m voters will be served initially, rising to 100m eventually; replacing out-dated hand voting, the Unisys system will increase tabulation efficiency from 30 days to something close to six hours, it asserts.
