UK engineering students and graduates have arrived in Bangalore to gain hands-on experience in the IT industry.
The ‘India Gateway’ internship programme, launched by Wipro, is designed to expose 19 interns to new cultures while equipping them with the necessary business and technical skills to work abroad.
Wipro said the programme involves a three-month technology induction course followed by three months of on-the-job training with Wipro teams. In the final three months, interns will have to work on live projects.
Tahim Choudhury, a student at Middlesex University, said: "My expectations are to excel throughout this programme and I believe that with the platform Wipro is providing, this is achievable, and this will also boost my professional growth."
The information technology company, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) among others held an induction ceremony in July at the Chelsea Football Club in London.
The Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts, said overseas internships offer students the chance to experience new cultures and understand different ways of working.
"To compete in the global race the UK must create graduates with a global outlook that makes them more attractive to potential employers and benefits the wider economy," he added.
Saurabh Govil, VP and global head of HR at Wipro, added: "With this initiative, we are hoping to provide bright graduates with an opportunity to kick-start successful careers in this field by equipping them with the necessary skill-sets and real-time exposure to the business environment."
