UK engineers go back to school to fight skills shortage

UK’s talent gap between tech skills that companies need and those available is the fourth worst in Europe.

By Joao Lima

Schneider Electric has become a corporate partner of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) to help the UK fight its tech skills shortage.

The venture will see Schneider Electric’s engineers and technicians go under a professional development scheme to enhance skills and network with other engineers from other industries.

The company said that the UK’s skills shortage is one of the biggest threats to continued economic growth and the worst in Europe, only exceeded by Ireland, Portugal and Spain.

Richard Gadd, Hitachi Data Systems UK MD told CBR: "Ensuring people have excellent coding and technical skills is essential for the UK’s future economic success. To achieve this businesses and educational bodies have an equally important role to play.

"By collaborating with educational bodies and offering more entry-level jobs with on-site training, businesses can help equip individuals with the right skills to pursue a career in IT. Over time, this will help bridge the IT skills gap and ensure the UK technology scene is an inspiring hub of great talent that can ignite economic success."

A 2014 study by the IET found that 60% of engineering employers fear that a growing shortage of engineers will threaten their business in the UK.
