IOT powered smart shop opens in London

Smart shops will “connect the unconnected” providing shoppers with real time tailored responsive experiences.

By Joao Lima

The UK’s IoT smart shop is officially opening its doors in London.

The Dandy Lab is a concept store enhanced by sensor technology.

Located in Spitalfields, London the shop sells menswear and footwear made by British companies.

Peter Jeun Ho Tsang, Co-Founder of The Dandy Lab, said: "We are bridging the gap between technology, retail and designers."

With this digital version of customer service,Tsang believes that his venture represents the "future of retail" based on four principles: shopping, exposing the products, proximity with clients and personalised experience.

He said: "It is about how to merge the physical world with the digital world."

The shop will gather detailed information on how shoppers are acting within the store with data collected from the moment he or she enters.

Cisco is a partner in the venture supplying the shop with network solutions, with its Meraki Cloud controlling WiFi, routing, and security features.

Bob Garland, vertical solutions architect, UK Retail, at Cisco, said that the experience can be continually improved because it is cloud based.

He said: "[It is like a] Shop in a box with edge computing. It is a data driven concept."

The "shop in a box" works through sensors embedded all around the shop. Data is analysed to transform the space in real time, giving retailers a view of what items to carry at particular times and where to display stock.

Connecting air conditioning, lighting and other systems in the shop will give retailers a view of the whole ecosystem.

Julija Bainiaksina, Co-Founder of The Dandy Lab, said the data is used to learn what customers want and will create the digital version of the "customer is always right" standard.

The store will be open on a beta trial for seven months with the view to opening a permanent store early next year.
