Telcos opt for Juniper in 5G and SDN roll-out

The company is to boost delivery of secure software-defined network (SDN) across telcos.

Juniper Networks has announced that it has been selected as a Vodafone Global Approved Vendor for its Contrail Networking software defined networking (SDN) solution.

The company’s Contrail Networking SDN solution works to both automate and orchestrate the creation of highly scalable virtual networks, which enable operators like Vodafone to harness the power of the cloud for new services, increased business agility and revenue growth.

Currently at Mobile World Congress (MWC), Juniper is delivering a presentation of VPN+ which is a showcase for Vodafone’s multi-vendor mobile VPN services portfolio. It is also an integral part of Vodafone’s Ocean Transformation.

Luca Claretti, Vodafone global client director, Juniper Networks said: “The technical and commercial appraisal that proceeds becoming a Vodafone Global Approved Vendor is extremely rigorous.

“The selection of our Contrail Networking solution is a major validation of our technology’s ability to help our customers drive innovation and be best positioned to win in a hyper competitive marketplace.”

All VPN+ services are designed to be supported with customer-portal, allowing users to select, and change and provision services with a mouse click.

The company demonstrates use cases of the services which include a selection of SD-WAN, service chaining and on-demand services. This is to also include virtual cloud-hosted services, universal and virtualised Customer Premises Equipment (CPE).

Also at MWC, Juniper Networks expands on its work with large-scale teleco Telefonica, with plans to help the company overcome challenges ahead of the rollout of its 5G mobile services.

Telefonica has relied on Juniper’s network innovation for over 20 years and has recently positioned the company as one of two key vendors in the all-IP Fusion integrated offer infrastructure in Spain.

Juniper Networks, which was present at the recent ‘Telefonica Talks’ event, highlighted the importance of agile and secure IP networking as the key element for effective 5G services.

The services offered by Telefonica are to boost the delivery of innovation and excellence in areas such as large-scale IoT, mobile broadcast, connected vehicles and broadband in populated areas.

Juniper says technologies such as Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) and Software-Defined Network (SDN) are essential for flexible, secure and agile 5G architecture. This is also expected to deploy network functions on demand with risk reduction.

Examples of Juniper’s innovation for the development of 5G-enabling network infrastructure include its Software-Defined Secure Networks (SDSN) platform to move security functions across necessary points.

This is supported with the creation of multiple on-demand virtual networks with its Contrail Networking and Multi-Access Edge Computing.

Enrique Blanco, global chief technology officer, Telefonica said: “Telefonica believes that 5G will have a tremendous impact on network infrastructure, which will only be mitigated by disruptive emerging technologies, such as NFV and SDN that can enable automated, flexible and secure services at scale.”

Juniper continues to expand its SDSN platform following the recent announcement of a collaboration alliance which will enable partners to pair their technologies with the platforms.
