The roll-out of Windows 2000 across corporate PC estates is expected to spark new interest in LAN-based asset management systems, and interested vendors are busily buffing up their products in anticipation of a sales bonanza. In the case of Tally Systems Corp, the latest lick of polish on its NetCensus package adds a selection of new hardware recognition features including, for the first time in Tally’s case, identification of a range on non-Intel CPUs.

Version 2.95 of the Hanover, New Hampshire company’s flagship product can now recognize chips from AMD, Cyrix, WinChip and NextGen. It also brings with it proprietary tags which help it do a more better job of identifying and cataloguing Dell Corp products, recording details such as the model and serial numbers of Dell’s OptiPlex, PowerEdge, Latitude and Workstation 400 lines. In Version 2.96 of NetCensus, slated for delivery next month, Tally said it will add similar facilities for recognizing Hewlett-Packard PCs.

Tally claims a global installed base for NetCensus of over 7.5 million client licenses, distributed among 11,000 customers. Version 2.95 is available now priced at between $16 and $48 per PC according to volume.
