Industry reports say that Sun Microsystems Inc is reorganizing its divisions to better address new markets and resolve the headache created by staffing up its Netscape alliance with 1,100 of its employees. Alan Baratz gets the reins to a new software products and platform division. Jon Kannegaard takes Baratz’s job as president a general manager of Java software and reports to Baratz along with Jini co-creator Mike Clary, the newly-appointed VP and general manager of consumer and embedded products and Anil Gardre, formerly VP marketing of Sun’s computer group, now VP and general manager of Solaris. Former Solaris boss John McFarlane becomes general manager of a new network services provider division and reports to president and COO Ed Zander. Sun has a slew of hardware, software and distribution programs targeted at the outsourced service provider market. The Sun-Netscape alliance is headed by Mark Tolliver who formerly ran the consumer and embedded products group. The changes are slated to become active at the beginning of Sun’s new financial year in July.
