The Maynard, Massachusetts-based company’s CEO told Computer Business Review in August that the general-purpose ftServer models were in development to sit alongside its T-Series machines, which were launched in March 2004 and are aimed squarely at the telecommunications market.
Stratus has inked a deal with Red Hat to support the Enterprise Linux AS (advanced server) distribution on its Intel Corp processor-based ftServer fault tolerant hardware, which is designed to provide uptime in excess of 99.999%.
The company had previously used its own ft Linux software, a customized version of the Linux 2.4.18 kernel, for the T-Series line, but that will now also transition to Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS.
As well as telecommunications, the new Linux ftServer line will be targeted at Stratus’s core markets such as banking, securities, manufacturing, and public safety systems. These markets are currently supplied by Stratus with its W-Series Windows-based servers, V-Series servers running VOS, and the PA-RISC-based Continuum line.
