Japanese video game company Sony Computer Entertainment has sold one million units of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) gaming console within the first 24 hours of its official launch in the US and Canada.

The new device was released on 15th November for $399 and is scheduled to hit the stores in Europe and Latin American countries from 29 November.

Sony Computer Entertainment head Andrew House said sales remain very strong in North America.

"We expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29," House added.

Earlier, the Japanese firm had announced over one million pre-orders globally for the PS4 gaming console.

PS4, which is the company’s first gaming platform version in seven years, includes a Blue-Ray drive for games and films, USB and Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections.

Powered by AMD’s x86-based central processing unit, PS4 also has upgraded version of PC graphics processing unit to simplify the GPU for general purpose computing.

The new gaming console offers 15 disc-based titles and the company is planning to launch additional 33 games including digital downloads by end of the year.

Sony is hoping to sell about five million PS4 units by the end of its fiscal ending on 31 March 2014.
